Central beats Northwestern after thrilling fourth quarter

A slow start led to an exhilarating finale, and after four lead changes in the fourth quarter, Central finally beat Northwestern.

After spending the whole game running through Miami Northwestern's defense, Miami Central asked a tired Devonta Freeman to stay on the field and keep an eye on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for the final two plays.

Freeman didn't have to make the final stop on Bridgewater's last-second heave to the end zone.

Charles Gaines stepped in front of the pass intended for Eli Rogers in the end zone and knocked it down, sealing the Rockets' thrilling 25-22 victory Friday night at FIU Stadium.

Central (5-1, 3-0 District 13-6A), ranked No. 2 in the state Class 6A poll, won its second game in a row against No. 1 Northwestern (4-1, 2-1).

Northwestern Bulls sit atop first state football poll

The debate over the top high school football team in the country began last week.

USA Today thinks highly of Miami Central, ranking the Rockets No. 2 nationally. But ESPN's Fab 50 preseason poll has rival Miami Northwestern in its top 10 at the No. 8 spot.

The top spot in the state rankings in Class 6A?

That went to the Bulls on Monday.

Northwestern is ranked No. 1 despite No. 2 Central earning nine of the poll's 12 first-place votes in the first state poll released by The Associated Press.

Central beat Northwestern for the first time in the playoffs last year before losing to eventual state champion Miramar in the state semifinals. Miramar was ranked third.

Central and Northwestern will play each other Oct. 9 at FIU Stadium, site of their past three meetings. Central opens the season with road games against Camden County High in Georgia and Dallas Madison in Texas, and plays host to Alabama powerhouse Prattville in October.

Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, which opens the season in Arlington, Texas, against Dallas Skyline on Sept. 6, was ranked No. 2 in Class 5A behind defending state champion Tampa Plant.

Community unites to pay for man's bariatric surgery

Several years ago, I was delighted when John Lester called me and invited me to sing at the annual Christmas Pageant with his children's choir at Beacon Hill Preparatory School in Miami Gardens. Lester is head of the school's music and drama program.

It was a wonderful evening; the children sang beautifully and even covered for me when I forgot the words to one of the songs. They were absolutely delightful, Lester had trained them well.

That was over a decade ago. Lester, who already had a weight problem at that time, eventually grew to weigh nearly 1,000 pounds. Gastric bypass surgery was desperately needed to save his life. The surgery would cost more than $21,000, and school insurance would not pay for it. Lester needed at least half the money before the surgery and the rest when the surgery was done.

That's when the Friends of John Lester Trust was formed. One of the trustees of the fund is the Rev. Ted Wilde, retired pastor of the Prince of Peace Morvarian Church in Miami Gardens. The group was able to raise the first half the money in time for Lester's May 6 surgery.

Performed at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, the surgery was a success. However, complications followed and Lester was re-hospitalized for a while. A stay in a rehab center followed.

It's been a tough few months, but when I spoke to Lester on Thursday , he was all geared up to going back to work on Monday.

``When I entered the clinic for the surgery, I was weighed in at over 900 pounds,'' Lester said. He is proud of the fact that two weeks ago, he weighed 571, almost half his original weight.

Lester, who has a doctorate in music education, said he is in awe at the way people stepped up to help him.

``It's hard to believe that people like this exist. They constantly work to meet the goal of paying the medical bills. I had the surgery on May 6, and I'm just getting home from rehab. But my goal is to start back working full-time on Monday,'' he said.

He uses a walker to assist him, but he said ``I can move much better than before I had the surgery.''

``Right now, I'm dealing with the problem of retaining fluid. But I'm going back [to school] full-time, as much as I can. That's the plan,'' Lester said.

It was Wilde who first brought Lester's plight to my attention. ``He is a genius at this teaching music,'' Wilde said. ``His pupils always rank very high in competitions.''

Wilde credits Beacon Hill's parents and staff and Lester's classmates from Miami Northwestern High School with helping him to have the surgery.

``The class of 1972 really took off on this project,'' Wilde said. They really reconnected with him. One classmate provided some of the nursing care Dr. Lester needed. Others helped in other ways. He lives in Miami Gardens with his elderly mother. The surgery was so necessary for him to get back to health''.

On Saturday, the Trust held a Back-to-School Prayer Breakfast at the El Paacio Sports Hotel as a fundraiser on Lester's behalf.

``We still have to raise the rest of the money,'' Wilde said.

7 Simple Principles for Living the Good Life

1. Keep it Simple and Quick
For some reason we tend to complicate everything. If you want to go from point A to point B, travel in a straight line. Don’t take any detours by adding unnecessary steps. Life is not that complicated so why not try simple for a change? You need to eat, sleep, love, express gratitude, and find meaning. Pick the obvious, simple, or easy alternative and go for it. Go with your gut and just enjoy the ride for a change.

2. Reduce Your Choices
It may sound counterintuitive but the more choices you have the more unhappy you are. Stop killing yourself with choices.

Barry Schwartz calls it “the paradox of choice,”. Facing many possibilities leaves us stressed out—and less satisfied with whatever we do decide. Having too many choices keeps us wondering about all the opportunities missed.

When you seem to have too many alternatives to choose from, a good way to reduce the problem is to just reduce the time spent pondering the decision. You want to lose weight and don’t know which diet is best? Eat less. Don’t know which outfit to wear? Put on some damn clothes! Want to see a movie? Pick the first one that grabs your attention and head out the door. Reduce your choices and stop wasting time making the simple complicated. Stop fretting over the perfect decision and start living a little.

3. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
I believe this to be one of the most important attitude changes you can make. When you don’t sweat the small stuff, you allow your mental energy to be available for the big stuff. I’ve made a lot of progress in not sweating the small stuff and it has made all the difference in the world for me.

4. Identify the Essential and Eliminate the Rest
This is the basic principle espoused by Leo Babauta. It is simple in concept, but takes a lot of commitment to implement. Most people don’t progress their lives the way they want to because they spend huge amounts of time on the non-essential. You need to sit down and specifically identify what in your life is essential and then eliminate everything else. You will tend to think everything you do is essential and nothing can be eliminated. Don’t get caught in that trap. What if you only had one month to live? Would all that trivia be essential then?

5. Eliminate the Drain People
For most of us, people taxes are more burdensome than government taxes. It is something that is overlooked and taken as a given, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

You have it within your power to eliminate from your life the people who drain your resources. The debaters, the complainers, the victims, the angry, the rude, the needy, and those who think you are obligated to live your life for them should be eliminated.

If you think you can’t eliminate them, at least reduce the tax you pay to them by limiting your interaction with them. Most important of all you should set yourself free from manipulative relationships.

6. Living in the Present Moment
So much has been written on this that I won’t spend a lot of words on it. Here is a nice article from Psychology Today: Six Steps to Living in the Moment.

7. Be Fit and Healthy
Some of you may believe that being fit and healthy is not that simple, but it is actually quite straightforward. It may require intense commitment to habit change in order to implement, but it is most assuredly not complicated. Do short, intense, and interval type exercises like the PACE program (not an affiliate link). Eat natural whole foods. Eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables for enzymes. Eat fish, chicken, and grass fed beef. Eat tons of green leafy and cruciferous vegetables. Eat a variety of seeds and nuts. Vin’s Natural Bias blog is an excellent resource for natural eating. Take Care of Your Body and Your Mind will Follow

We probably know by now that the biggest step to prosperity is getting your mental side in working order. In this process some of neglect to keep our bodies in working order. It is just as important to stay healthy when making big mental changes. Working out and eating right is the way to start, but sometimes we just need a little time for ourselves.

Here are some tips for excellent self-care:

Treat your body – while we exercise to take care of our body we should also remember to give it a treat, pamper it a little. This could be by way of a massage after a hard days work when it is tired and stressed or something as simple as standing up and giving it a stretch to ease knotted muscles.

Take time out – refresh your body and mind by giving yourself some space, some time just for you, this could be as little as five minutes where you find peace and solitude by closing your eyes and deep breathing. The longer you can take time out from your busy day just for yourself the better.

Let your inner child out – can you remember how much simpler life was when you were a child; go back to your childhood for a short while. Do something you used to enjoy doing as a child, this could be anything from rollerblading, lying on your back and finding shapes in the clouds, making a daisy chain or playing on a swing.

Comfort yourself – we all have something that comforts us in times when we need it, something that make us feel safe and secure. Take time out to comfort yourself every now and again. This could be sitting in front of a roaring fire and watching the flames dance, relaxing in a hot bubble bath surrounded by candlelight, snuggling up in a favorite blanket or a particular smell that relaxes you.

Relax in fantasy – take time out to go out of your world and into another, this could be by way of a book, magazine or film. Or better yet visualization; go into your own fantasy world, created by your own mind.

Treat yourself to a mental health day – treat yourself to a whole day of just doing whatever it is you enjoy doing, don’t do any work or even think or feel guilty about what you should be doing. Just make the day all about you.

Rediscover nature – reconnect with the world around you by taking a long walk through the park, notice how green the grass is and how blue the sky and marvel at the weird and wonderful shapes of the clouds drifting over the sky.

Do something you keep putting off – take time out to do something you have been meaning to do for a long time. Don’t keep putting it off, make today the day to do it.

These are just some of the ways you can help to improve your health by taking care of your mental health, just open your mind and be more aware of your body and mind and you will discover many other ways to take care of your mental health which ultimately leads to a happier and healthier you, overall.

Dear friends and supporters of John Lester,

On behalf of Dr. John Lester, thank you for your most recent generous contribution of $313.50 to the Friends of John Lester Trust. This was the amount collected at the Northwestern H.S. Alumni Old School Night, Friday, May 7.

These gifts go 100 percent toward the medical treatment and May 6 surgery of Dr. Lester at Cleveland Clinic in Weston. The initial results are reported to be highly positive and Dr. Lester should be returning home any day now.

Combined with previous donations attributable to Northwestern alumni and friends, the total of such Northwestern-related donations is now $1,211. This is a significant source of assistance to Dr. Lester to receive the treatment he needed and will continue to need. It will be great for this same spirit of giving to continue, just as Dr. Lester’s need for fundraising continues.

Also, Dr. Lester expresses how he is uplifted by the renewed friendships and care from
Northwestern alumni, like the visit of three alumni to his home to provide-fix-up work, including the repair of his main chair. Also, he has appreciated the hospital visits and phone calls of support and prayer.

Hello classmates,

I'm doing just fine, God is Good.

Geneivee moved back to Florida about 1 1/2 year ago, near the Tampa area. The Nashville subdivision that she
lived in had a GREAT deal of damage, five individuals died in that area about five miles
from my home.

I left for Atlanta, GA for my job on May 2, 2010, did not realize the depth of
the situation until I was in my hotel room watching the news. Apparently, I actually
drove in the midst of the storm. God watches over fools and babies. I guess I was
a blessed fool that day.

Thank you for checking on me, I received calls from Sam Solomon, Don, Davann and
Clarinda. If you see them before me, please let everyone know that Father God of mercy

John Lester Update

1. Medical dates. Along with May 6 set for Dr. Lester's gastric bypass surgery, he now has Friday, April 30, for his
pre-op consultations at Cleveland Clinic.

2. Critical time for donations. Payment of the $10,450 half of the total fee (plus some additional medical preparation costs) is due before the May 6 surgery. The Friends of John Lester Trust has $4,700 in hand and needs at least $5,750 more in this coming week.. So if you or someone you know is thinking to make a first donation or further donation, now is the time. All donations go 100% for Doc’s treatment. Please make donations to Friends of John Lester Trust, P.O. Box 694244 , Miami FL 33269 . Or phone or e-mail Ted Wilde if you need someone to pick up your donation--305 690-0230.

3. Further publicity and fundraising. In June - August after the surgery, Dr. Lester needs to pay the remaining $10,450 fee. So we need to keep organizing fund-raising projects and look for publicity that can provide a breakthrough on this amount..
